چکیده

We report the redshift measurement for the submillimeter selected galaxy SMMJ04431+0210 (N4) using the Near Infrared Spectrograph on the Keck II telescope. The data show Hα, [NII] 6583,6548, and [OIII] 5007 lines at a redshift of z = 2.51. The high nuclear [NII]/Hα line ratio is consistent with a LINER or Type-II AGN. The Hα emission is spatially resolved, suggesting the presence of significant star-forming activity outside the nucleus. From imaging with the Near Infrared Camera on the Keck I telescope, we find an extremely red near-infrared color of J−K=3.2 for N4. Follow-up redshifted CO(3→2) observations with the Owens Valley Millimeter Array constrain the mass of molecular gas to be less than 4 × 10M⊙, after correcting for lensing. The CO to sub-mm flux limit, the spectroscopic line ratios, and the spectral energy distribution for N4 are all within the range of properties found in other high-redshift sub-mm sources and local ultraluminous infrared galaxies. After the correction for lensing, N4 is the weakest intrinsic sub-mm selected source with a known redshift and represents the first redshift for the < 2mJy 850μm sources which are responsible for the bulk of the emission from the sub-mm population as a whole. We argue that N4 contains either an AGN or LINER nucleus surrounded by an extended region of active star-formation. We report the detection of CO(3!2) emission from the submillimeter{selected hyperluminous galaxy SMM 02399{0136. This galaxy is the brightest source detected in the recent SCUBA surveys of the submillimeter sky. The optical counterpart of the submillimeter source has been identiied as a narrow-line AGN/starburst galaxy at z = 2:8. The CO emission is unresolved, < 5 00 , and is coincident in red...

Detection of X-ray Emission from Gravitationally Lensed Submillimeter Sources in the Field of Abell

We report the detection by Chandra of SMM J02399−0134 and SMM J02399−0136, two distant (z = 1.06 and z = 2.81, respectively) submillimeter sources gravitationally magnified by the galaxy cluster Abell 370. These are high-significance (> 7σ) X-ray detections of the high-redshift submillimeter source population. The X-ray positions are coincident with the optical positions to within one arcsecond...

We report the first detection of CO (1!0) emission from a submillimeter-selected galaxy, using the Green Bank Telescope. We identify the line in the spectrum of SMM J13120+4242 as a broad emission feature at z 1⁄4 3:408, with VFWHM 1⁄4 1040 190 km s . If the observed CO (1!0) line profile arises from a single object and not several merging objects, then the CO (4!3)/CO (1!0) brightness temperat...

Molecular Gas in the Z=2.565 Submillimeter Galaxy Smm J14011+0252

We report the detection of CO(3→2) emission from the submillimeter–selected luminous galaxy SMMJ14011+0252. The optical counterpart of the submillimeter source has been identified as a merger system with spectral characteristics consistent with a starburst at z = 2.565. The CO emission confirms the optical identification of the submillimeter source and implies a molecular gas mass of 5×1010h 75...

Using the SPectrometer for Infrared Faint Field Imaging (SPIFFI) on the ESO VLT, we have obtained J, H, and K band integral field spectroscopy of the z = 2.565 luminous submillimeter galaxy SMM J14011+0252. A global spectrum reveals the brighter of this spatially resolved system's two components as an intense starburst that is remarkably old, massive, and metal-rich for the early epoch at which...
